Security Awareness and Crime Prevention

Bay College has a proud history of providing a safe learning environment for it students and employees. A wide variety of policies and procedures have been developed over the years to ensure the health and safety of students, employees, and visitors to the campuses.

Reporting a Crime or Other Emergency
All students, employees, and guests should promptly report criminal incidents, accidents, and other emergencies by dialing 911 or in the event of a non-emergency by filling out an internal incident report form available on the menu to the left or the link below.

Confidential Reporting
You can file a report on the details of the incident without revealing your identity, however you cannot report the incident to a campus security authority (CSA) because they are designated as mandatory reporters. The purpose of a confidential report is to comply with your wish to keep the matter confidential, while taking steps to ensure the future safety of all. With such information, the College can keep an accurate record of the number of incidents involving students, determine where there is a pattern of crime with regard to a particular location, method, or assailant, and alert the campus community to potential danger. Reports filed in this manner are counted and disclosed in the annual crimes statistics for the institution. You can file an anonymous report from the College’s website.

Timely Warnings
In the event that a situation arises, either on or off campus, that, in the judgment of campus personnel, constitutes an ongoing or continuing threat, a campus wide “timely warning” will be issued through the college’s communication systems. Depending on the particular circumstance the College may also post a notice on the College website, the myBay portal, and notify local media. In such instances, a copy of the notice will also be distributed to each campus student apartment.

The timely warning statement will also provide instructions on what actions you should take. A timely warning is meant to provide information so you can make decisions about your personal safety. For example, if college personnel are aware of someone stealing items on campus, a timely warning could be issued so you are aware and can take extra measures to keep your valuables safe. Or, as another example, if college personnel receive complaints about a person exposing themselves in the parking lots, they may issue a timely warning so you are more aware of your surroundings.

Campus Weather Alerts
Students are encouraged to register to receive a BayAlert message regarding campus closures due to an emergency, severe weather or mechanical failure. The warning will also be issued through the college e-mail system to students, faculty, and staff.

Sex Offender Registry
In accordance with Federal law, Bay College provides a link on the College’s website to the Michigan State Police Sex Offender Registry. The purpose of this link is to advise the campus community where law enforcement information provided by the State of Michigan concerning registered sex offenders may be obtained. In Michigan, convicted sex offenders must register with the Sex Offender Registry. The Michigan State Police is responsible for maintaining this registry. Click here for the link to the Public Sex Offender Registry.

Annual Security Report
The College prepares an Annual Security and Fire Safety Report in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act. This report contains information regarding reporting of crimes and other emergencies occurring on campus, the college’s security policies, and the crime arrest and referral statistics reported to designated campus officials and local law enforcement agencies. Click Annual Security Report to view the report. A copy of the report may also be obtained at the office of the Vice President of Operations located in the Catherine Bonifas building room 202A or by calling (906) 217-4077. At West Campus a copy may be obtained at the office of the Vice President of Bay College West, room 215.
