President's first blog post

I am diving into the posting blog world today.  They say trying new things is a great way to expand your mind so my mind is getting ready to be expanded in a big way :-).

This week I was priviledged to attend an OER launch conference with Joseph Mold, Mark Kinney, Todd McCann and Ann Sebeck.  Bay College is one of 38 colleges awarded a 31 month grant which will fund a rapid deployment of two or three degrees where all books will be available through OER.  This will save Bay students significant money as they work towards their degrees.  Research shows only 40% of students buy textbooks because of the cost.  With OER 80% buy textbooks.  Research also shows because students have the tools they need (books)  to be successful increases successful completion of courses and degrees.

Several faculty are already using OER for the course materials and another 15 have shown interest in participating in the grant to increase the options for Bay College students.

This grant focuses on the Bay College priority of Student Success!

Thanks Dr. Coleman. For the record - OER stands for Open Educational Resources. While they greatly reduce the cost of books for students, many of them are free as e-books if the student doesn't need or want to pay for a hard copy. I think this is a great way to support Bay students. Thanks everyone for working to support students.
